ABSTRACT

Heart failure (HF) is a condition with growing morbidity and mortality. Dyslipidemia in HF is not concentrated around hypercholesterolemia as in coronary artery disease. As a corollary, the robust benefits seen with statins across the spectrum of CAD have not been replicated in HF. Multiple potential pleiotropic effects of statins include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, endothelial stabilization, antiapoptotic, anti-thrombotic, and modulation of the autonomic system apart from lipid lowering. These benevolent actions need to be counterbalanced with the potential derangement of ubiquinone, selenoprotein and endotoxin pathways. While small randomized and non-randomized studies demonstrated a multitude of benefits in clinical and surrogate endpoints, two large RCTs failed to demonstrate unequivocal benefits. However, multiple large meta-analyses do demonstrate definite improvement in clinical endpoints including death and heart failure hospitalization. The clinical likelihood of benefit was higher in younger patients with less advanced HF and use of lipophilic statins.

ABSTRACT

In this study, manganese substituted strontium hexaferrite (SrFe12-xMnxO19; x = 0, 3, 5, and 7) prepared by the sol-gel auto-combustion method are studied. We observed that the substituted Mn preferentially goes to the 2a and 12k sites of Fe. Raman modes related to the 12k site suggest the stiffening of the lattice. The transformation of the grain's shape from hexagonal (x = 0 and 3) to rhombohedral (x = 7) was observed, as shown in the micrographs obtained from FESEM. The thermomagnetic curves show the shift of TC to lower temperatures with the increase in the Mn content. From x = 5 onwards, the growth of another magnetic phase (FiM2) of lower coercivity apart from the parent phase (FiM1) of higher coercivity is seen. The FiM2 phase was found to increase with the Mn content in the sample (16.4(3)% for x = 5 but 66.2(5)% for x = 7). Although the magnetization for both FiM1 and FiM2 decreases with the increase in temperature, both magnetic phases behave in contrast to each other for x = 5 and x = 7. The study suggests a transformation of the compound from high magnetic anisotropy (x = 0) to low magnetic anisotropy (x = 7). The x = 5 composition sample displays the highest value of the first-order ME coefficient (0.83(2) mV × cm-1 × Oe-1). The observed value for x = 5 composition is ∼2.5 times higher than that of the parent x = 0 composition sample (0.33(2) mV × cm-1 × Oe-1). The studies thus suggest that the x = 5 composition is one of the viable candidates for magnetoelectric applications.

ABSTRACT

Multiferroic composites are promising candidates for magnetic field sensors, next-generation low power memory and spintronic devices, as they exhibit much higher magnetoelectric (ME) coupling and coupled ordering parameters compared to the single-phase multiferroics. Hence, the 3-0 type particulate multiferroic composites having general formula (1 - Φ)[PbFe0.5Nb0.5O3]-Φ[Co0.6Zn0.4Fe1.7Mn0.3O4] (Φ = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 1.0, (1 - Φ) PFN-ΦCZFMO) were prepared using a hybrid synthesis technique. Preliminary structural and microstructural analysis were carried out using XRD and FESEM techniques, which suggest the formation of 3-0 type particulate composite without the presence of any impurity phases. The multiferroic behaviour of the composites is studied with polarization versus electric field (P-E) and magnetization versus magnetic field (M-H) characteristics at room temperature. The nature of ME coupling was investigated elaborately by employing the Landau free energy equation along with the magneto-capacitance measurement. This investigation suggests the existence of biquadratic nature of ME coupling (P2M2). The magneto-electric coupling measurement also suggests that strain mediated domain coupling between the ferroelectric and magnetic ordering is responsible for the magneto-electric behaviour. The obtained value of direct ME coefficient 26.78 mV/cm-Oe for Φ = 0.3, found to be higher than the well-known single-phase materials and polycrystalline composites.

ABSTRACT

Methane leads to global warming owing to its warming potential higher than carbon dioxide (CO2). Rice fields represent the major source of methane (CH4) emission as the recent estimates range from 34 to 112 Tg CH4 per year. Biogenic methane is produced by anaerobic methanogenic archaea. Advances in high-throughput sequencing technologies and isolation methodologies enabled investigators to decipher methanogens to be unexpectedly diverse in phylogeny and ecology. Exploring the link between biogeochemical methane cycling and methanogen community dynamics can, therefore, provide a more effective mechanistic understanding of CH4 emission from rice fields. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the diversity and activity of methanogens, factors controlling their ecology, possible interactions between rice plants and methanogens, and their potential involvement in the source relationship of greenhouse gas emissions from rice fields.

ABSTRACT

Efforts were made to isolate and characterize bacteria capable of growing on methane and organic compounds, and to achieve the simultaneous degradation of more than one pollutant. Among the methanotrophs, species of Methylobacterium was able to catabolize a variety of hydrocarbons, including the branched-chain alkenes. Therefore, laboratory incubations experiments were carried out in batch mode to assess the potential of Methylobacterium sp. PV1 for degrading isoprene, the low-molecular-weight alkene, the most abundant non-methane volatile hydrocarbon present in the environment. Methylobacterium sp. PV1, isolated from paddy field soil, was characterized by pmoA and 16S rRNA gene sequencing and FAME analysis, and used for isoprene degradation. The kinetics of biodegradation is studied using the Michaelis-Menten model. The optimum degradation (80%) with maximum average relative degradation rate was observed at 150ppm isoprene. The degradation products were also analyzed using FTIR.

ABSTRACT

Isoniazid (INH) is an integral component of treatment of tuberculosis. An acute overdose is potentially fatal and is characterised by the clinical triad of repetitive seizures unresponsive to the usual anticonvulsants, metabolic acidosis with a high anion gap and coma. A case of isoniazid induced seizures after therapeutic dose of 600 mg. as a part of CAT I thrice weekly intermittent anti-tuberculosis regimen for pulmonary tuberculosis is reported. The frequency of the usage of Isoniazid as antituberculosis therapy requires that physicians be aware of such toxicity.

ABSTRACT

Statins are the most effective and widely used drugs for treating dyslipidemia, a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. These are one of the safest hypolipidemic drugs but many patients are bound to discontinue statins due to their side effects. Hepatotoxicity, myotoxicity and peripheral neuropathy are important out of them. Discontinuation of statins leads to dylipidemia and its grave consequences. Hence, there should be enough strategies for statin intolerant patients, so that they can be saved from these consequences. These side effects can be avoided by the awareness of certain factors viz. potential drug interactions and dose adjustment according to patho-physiology of the patient. Baseline investigations for liver function and muscle toxicity should be done before initiating statin therapy. Here, we are discussing various options for statin intolerant hyperlipidemic patients such as lower and intermittent dosing of statins, alternate hypolipidemic drugs, red yeast rice, supplementation with coenzyme Q10 and vitamin D. A number of hypolipidemic drugs are in trial phases and hold promise for statin intolerant patients.

ABSTRACT

Inspection of multiferroicity in BiMn(2 - x)Ti(x)O(5) (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.30) (BMTO) ceramics is performed through specific heat and Raman spectroscopic studies. Thermal variation of specific heat (C) (in the absence and presence of fixed magnetic fields up to 14 T) and Raman spectra of BMTO are presented. In the temperature variation of C, a remarkable anomaly at the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature (T(N) ∼ 39 K) is observed in all samples. Pure BiMn(2)O(5) (for x = 0.0) exhibits a larger specific heat anomaly at T(N) compared to that of Ti substituted samples, both in the presence and absence of external magnetic fields. The excess specific heat (ΔC) versus T clearly illustrates appreciable anomalies at ∼ 86 and ∼ 120 K in Ti doped samples related to the magnetic and dielectric transitions, respectively. The low temperature specific heat (LTSH) data indicate a considerably improved ferromagnetic contribution in samples with higher Ti concentration (x > 0.15). The Raman spectra of the doped samples at different fixed temperatures validate the strong electron-phonon coupling corresponding to the observed magnetism and increased harmonicity at dielectric transitions.

ABSTRACT

We report here on a simple but precise thermoelectric power measurement setup that can be adapted for different environments. This setup has been extensively used for cryogen-free environment to measure a variety of samples. It is made simple to load and hold the sample between two copper blocks by a spring-shaft arrangement. The usable range of measurements is a few microV/K to a few hundreds of microV/K. The salient features of the setup in achieving good precision both in natural warm-up/cooldown and controlled measurements are (i) the continuous DeltaT control across the sample by a chromel-AuFe(0.07%) thermocouple and (ii) the measurements of emf generated across the sample and the thermocouple using a nanovoltmeter and a scanner system. The versatile nature of the setup is further demonstrated by employing it in a magnetic field environment up to 140 kOe. The precision achieved using this system is highlighted for a few systems of current interest.
